Do you want to get the most out of your visit to the Vatican Museums but you're not a morning person? You can still skip the lines and tour with an enthusiastic, knowledgeable guide! Our Small Group Afternoon Vatican Tour gives you all of this, in a friendly group of up to 18 participants.
At 2:00 pm you will meet our team at the Vatican Museums. You will be handed headsets before the Vatican tour begins and introduced to the rest of your group and passsionate guide. Get ready to discover all that one of the world's most famous museums has to offer! Your guide will bring art history to life as you meander through galleries housing countless examples of roman and greek statues, paintings, mosaics and much more. These works of art are either part of the Popes' own private collection through the years or have been donated to the Catholic church. You will be relieved to have an expert guide to talk you through the unimagineable beauty and history preserved inside the Vatican Museums.
Your small group will visit the Octagonal Courtyard, learning all about the "Apollo of Belvedere"and the "Laocoon" marble statues. In the Round room you will come face to face with the imposing bronze statue of Hercules, a rare example of a Roman bronze statue that was preserved, rather than melted down for its precious metal. You'll be blown away by the huge, round bathtub in the middle of the room. Did you know this bathtub came from Nero's Villa, 'Domus Aurea', near the Colosseum and was used by the infamous Emperor himself? Our guide will have you enthralled with fascinating stories of Rome and the Vatican's past as you weave your way through the Vatican Museums' ornate galleries. You will reach the incomparable Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo's 'piece de resistance'. It took Michelangelo 9 years to complete the incredible frescoes. Your expert guide will explain the hidden stories behind the artwork and the genius of Michelangelo himself.
From the Sistine Chapel you will get privileged fast track access to St Peter's Basilica through a reserved passageway. St Peter's Basilica is one of the largest churches in the world and houses many ancient and renaissance treasures. One such treasure is Michelangelo's famous 'pieta' statue, depicting Mary holding Jesus after his crucification. An incredibly moving piece of art, you will gain an even deeper understanding of Michelangelo and his work. St Peter's Basilica is an impressive example of baroque architecture and decor and your passionate guide will explain to you all about this style and the man behind it, Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Bernini designed the amazing bronze statue "Baldacchino," towering almost 90 feet into the ceiling, as well as the Altar of the Chair of St. Peter.
At the end of the tour you can choose to stay inside the Basilica for longer in order to climb the dome (to pay on site) or go down to see the Papal Grottoes.
With our Small Group Afternoon Vatican Tour you will experience the very best of the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and St Peter's Basilica.
