This tour departs at 8:30 am and is generally organized in shared groups of maximum 10 people. During the tour you are allowed to take pictures without flash and you can easily hear the guide because we will provide headsets at the beginning of the tour. Among the highlights of this tour there is also the visit to the apartment of Pope Julius II, in which you will have the chance to admire the rooms painted by the young Raphael such as the School of Athens. Then there will also be time to step into Pope Borgia’s apartment painted by Pinturicchio and his assistants. Besides seeing the beautifully painted rooms, you will also learn some real story about the Borgia family and the future Pope Alexander VI, who had a daughter, before he was elected Pope, and she was the beautiful Lucrezia Borgia.
Afterward, you will step inside the Sistine Chapel, where you will be surrounded by Michelangelo’s frescoes. The Sistine Chapel is still nowadays in use for the election of the Pope, the Conclave, and the indoor part is connected with an outdoor section from where a pipe of a stove exits and when the Pope is elected all the people waiting in St. Peter’s square see white smoke. If there is no election the smoke is black until the new Pope will be elected.
From this area of the Vatican you will move on to St. Peter Basilica with your guided tour and access into the Basilica from a special door that is used only for visitors on tour who can quickly enter without standing in line. You will be breathless when you will see the beautiful “Pieta” by Michelangelo and the incredible Canopy also called “Baldachin”. You will also see in the center the marvelous “Cathedra Petri”, which is the Chair of St. Peter. It can happen that the Basilica of St. Peters’ is not visible due to special Religious functions held by the Cardinals or the Pope, the closing of St. Peter’s can be an unexpected decision taken by the Vatican Museums; in this case we will add in the itinerary the Painting gallery or the Raphael Rooms, once the Pope Julius’ II apartment, as an alternative site.
